CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH

Getting back to the basics of IT Security

In today’s interconnected world, cybersecurity has become a critical concern for businesses across all sectors, especially the hospitality industry. With the increasing integration of technology in hotel operations, from online reservations to guest experience management, ensuring the protection of sensitive data has never been more crucial. We are very excited to announce that starting this year, DHM will participate in and leverage Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is observed globally in October each year. During this month, we will focus on raising awareness about cybersecurity best practices and educating our employees and partners on potential threats and protective measures.

Here are some of the activities that we will focus on during Cybersecurity Awareness Month this year:

1. Employee Training: We will conduct cybersecurity awareness webinars for our employees, emphasizing the importance of strong passwords, phishing awareness, safe browsing habits, reporting suspicious activities and encouraging them to stay vigilant and follow security policies and procedures.

2. Employee Education: We will focus on creating employee awareness about cybersecurity, by having fun activities and weekly contests, such as poster design, crosswords and word searches, and even an online scavenger hunt. These activities are designed to educate, and also encourage employees to stay vigilant and follow security policies and practices, while making learning fun!

In addition, our IT Department will also be undertaking the following activities –

1. Regular Software Updates: Keep all software, including operating systems, antivirus solutions, and applications, up to date with the latest security patches and upgrades. Regularly update firmware and perform security audits on network devices, such as routers and firewalls.

2. Secure Wi-Fi Networks: Ensure that your guest Wi-Fi networks are secure and separate from your internal network. Implement strong encryption protocols, regularly change Wi-Fi passwords, and monitor for unauthorized access attempts.

3. Vendor and Third-Party Risk Management: Evaluate the security practices of your vendors and third-party service providers, especially those handling sensitive customer data. Establish clear security requirements in your contracts and regularly assess their compliance.

4. Regular Backups: Implement a robust backup strategy for critical systems and data. Regularly test and verify the integrity of your backups, ensuring they are stored securely and can be quickly restored if needed.

5. Ongoing Awareness: Cybersecurity awareness is not limited to a specific month. Continuously promote cybersecurity best practices throughout the year through newsletters, training sessions, posters, and reminders to keep cybersecurity top of mind for employees and customers.

6. Vulnerability Assessments: Perform regular vulnerability assessments and penetration tests to identify any weaknesses in your network infrastructure, payment systems, and guest reservation platforms. Address any vulnerabilities promptly to minimize the risk of data breaches.

7. Incident Response Plan: Develop and review an incident response plan that outlines the steps to be taken in the event of a cybersecurity incident or data breach. Ensure that key personnel are trained on their roles and responsibilities during such incidents.

8. Data Protection and Privacy: Review your data protection and privacy policies to ensure compliance with relevant regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or other applicable laws in your jurisdiction. Regularly review access controls, encryption practices, and data retention policies.

In an era where cyberattacks continue to rise in frequency and sophistication, it is paramount for the hospitality industry to prioritize cybersecurity. By implementing robust cybersecurity measures, securing payment processes, protecting guest data, and fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness, we can safeguard our operations and protect our guests’ sensitive information.
